Named after Sir John Moores, one of Liverpool’s and the United Kingdom’s most prominent XXth century businessmen, Liverpool John Moores University gained the status of University in 1992 after more than 150 years of education training starting with the Liverpool Mechanics and Apprentices’ Library founded in 1823, laying the foundations for the colleges of Art, Pharmacy, Nautical Science, Technology and Commerce, created throughout the 19th century. Liverpool John Moores previous colleges were pioneers when it came to women’s education, allowing women to study all kinds of subjects since 1835. Later on, in 1900, the college of Physical Training was created, also emphasizing the women’s importance in Physical Education trainings.
